How it works

Stabilization at the Base

The base layer of a road lays the foundation for the upper pavement structure. It must offer excellent bearing capacity, be capable of withstanding a broad range of different climatic conditions, and remain functional over many, many years.

BASE ONE® stabilizes and enhances the base material through its detergency, lubricating, and bonding properties. It contains a high concentration of silicon dioxide and sodium oxide that acts like cement by forming hydrated calcium silicate when added to the material. BASE ONE dries to form a tough, tightly adhering inorganic, insoluble bond that lasts indefinitely.

BASE ONE® has been tested for years in some of the harshest conditions right here in the Upper Midwest. The frequent temperature extremes and freeze/thaw cycles we experience in this area of the country have provided the ultimate testing conditions for our products.

Based on many years of testing, an 8 in. depth of RAP/aggregate base material treated with BASE ONE® is equal to 12 in. of compacted aggregate base.

Applications

No matter the type of road construction or reconstruction, nor whether it is paved or unpaved, adding BASE ONE® can build it better.

Stabilized Full Depth Reclamation (SFDR) rebuilds old worn out asphalt pavements by recycling the existing roadway. The asphalt and a portion of the base material are pulverized, stabilized and compacted to produce a strong durable base for the upper road structure.

Stabilization of the base layer offers enhanced load bearing capacity, improves constructibility and adds strength and stability to withstand a broad range of different climatic conditions.

A pavement surface treatment that combines one or more layers of asphalt with one or more layers of fine aggregate, typically used on rural roads carrying lower traffic volumes. To increase the stability and performance of the road, a stabilizer can be added to the base material below.

Stabilization of the base material and surface gravel can help increase the load bearing capacity, reduce routine maintenance and potentially reduce gravel loss, lengthening your re-graveling cycles.

Application Methods

BASE ONE® is easy to apply. It is added to the water used to bring the base material to optimum moisture content for compaction, and incorporated in the base material using the preferred Reclaim and Inject Method or the Water Truck and Blade Mix Method.

Reclaim and Inject Method

The preferred method. Reclaim to design depth, then reclaim and inject BASE ONE® on the second pass to the designed stabilization depth.

Water Truck and Blade Mix Method

The blade mix method may be used after reclamation. It may also be used when adding base material during new construction, reconstruction, or re-graveling. Additional aggregate may be added prior to the application.

Independent Testing

American Engineering Testing measured BASE ONE® stabilized bases on county roads in Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin between 2011 and 2015, using Falling Weight Deflectometer and Ground Penetrating Radar on in-service roads, and reported in February 2016. Layer coefficients came in at 0.16 to 0.22, against 0.14 for high quality crushed aggregate base. On BIA Route 6 in North Dakota the accepted design used ten inches less aggregate base and still raised the structural number.

baseone.net publishes test result ranges compiled from field testing in multiple states by American Engineering Testing Inc., Braun Intertec and other independent testing labs.

The reference point throughout is a 30,000 psi resilient modulus, which the AASHTO correlation puts at a CBR of 100 and an R-Value of 85. That is high quality crushed aggregate base. Values drop with spring thaw and the reports say so, so the ranges below include the seasons.

BIA Route 6, an 11.32 mile section south of New Town, is worth reading closely. The original design called for 6 inches of Superpave over 18 inches of aggregate base, a structural number of 3.96. The accepted value engineering proposal was 6 inches of Superpave over 8 inches of BASE ONE stabilized aggregate over 12 inches of cement treated subgrade, SN 4.68. Ten inches less aggregate base, at a higher structural number.

Both built over poor quality sand lift base, which makes this the useful case for anyone working over bad subgrade. WisDOT references 30,000 psi for crushed aggregate but only 10,000 psi for crushed gravel, and equivalency factors came out at 1.4 against crushed aggregate and 1.9 against crushed gravel.

Design Implications

A layer coefficient of 0.16 to 0.22 against 0.14 for high quality crushed aggregate. That is the number that goes into your pavement design. A higher layer coefficient means a thinner section for the same structural number, which is how one county omitted 3 in. of aggregate base.

Up to 100 percent reuse of the material already in the road. Under the green road rating system, reusing 50 to 90 percent of existing pavement by volume earns credit points, and in-place aggregate and reclaimed bituminous stabilized with BASE ONE can reach full reuse.

Structurally effective without being brittle. AET concluded in all three reports that the moduli are high enough to distribute stress properly, but not so stiff as to induce excessive shrinkage cracking.
