How a mosquito program actually works

Larviciding first, because larvae sit still in known water

Adult mosquitoes are spread out and hard to reach. Larvae are concentrated in defined water, which makes treating them earlier and cheaper. Most programs put larviciding first and use adulticide only when surveillance calls for it.

A note on regulated products

Mosquito control products are EPA-registered pesticides, and several require a state pesticide license to purchase and apply. Which products can ship to a given state varies. Tell us your state on the quote and your Team Lab rep confirms what is available and what licensing applies. The site does not screen restrictions automatically; your rep handles it.

Microbial larvicides (Bti and Bs)

Bti and Bacillus sphaericus are naturally occurring microbes. Larvae ingest them and stop feeding. Their mode of action is specific to mosquito and related larvae, which is why they pose little risk to fish, birds, and beneficial insects when used per label.

Insect growth regulators (methoprene)

Methoprene mimics a juvenile hormone and blocks larvae from maturing into biting adults. It comes in briquets, pellets, and granules, including extended-release forms for catch basins and lagoons that hold control for weeks.

Integrated mosquito management

Surveillance, source reduction, larviciding, and targeted adulticiding work together. Eliminating standing water and treating known breeding sites does most of the work before adult control is ever needed.

Mosquito Control common questions

Should I use Bti or methoprene?

Both target larvae. Bti is a microbial larvicide that larvae ingest; methoprene is a growth regulator that prevents maturation and often lasts longer per application. Site and duration needs usually decide. We can help you choose.

Are these products safe around fish and wildlife?

Microbial larvicides like Bti and Bs are specific to mosquito and related larvae and have very few non-target effects when used per label. Always follow the label for the water body you are treating.

How often do I reapply?

Short-acting microbials often need reapplication around every 30 days as they degrade. Extended-release IGR briquets last much longer. The label and your rep set the schedule.
